The Garden State Philharmonic (GSP) and Maestro Diane Wittry are set to continue their 2021-22 live concert series this October with their Women in Music string concert. This performance is part of the Garden State Philharmonic’s Symphonic Encounters series for the organization’s 65th season.
The Women in Music concert will feature a unique program of notable pieces composed by pioneering women in symphonic music, and will be performed by a string quartet comprised of talented female musicians. Two composers of note include Fanny Mendelssohn and Florence Price. ”String Quartet in Eb Major” (1834) by Mendelssohn is one of the featured pieces, and is famous for being one of the first string quartets composed by a woman. Florence Price, the first African American woman to have their work played by a major symphony, will be featured in the program with her composition “String Quartet no. 2”. Other composers featured in the program include Maddalena Lombardini, Grazyna Bacewicz, and current living composer, Gabriela Lena Frank.
The concert will be performed at the Grunin Center for the Arts on the campus of Ocean County College on October 31st, 2021 at 3pm. Tickets are available on the GSP website.
